Hand-burnished with rock and based on ancient cultural motifs, Chulucanas pottery is made by the descendants of indigenous Peruvian artists. Modern artisans have researched and evolved the negative-positive technique, developed more than 2,000 years ago. Artisans paint designs with slip, a diluted clay mixture. The piece is fired with burning mango leaves, creating dark color while the slip patterning remains light.
